Realtor magazine Interviews Richard Ford

Not known for its editorial direction, production values or access to the literary high-and-mighty, Realtor magazine interviewed Pulitzer-Prize winning author Richard Ford, author of Independence Day and The Sportswriter, last month regarding The Lay of the Land, his most recent novel. He gets realtor Frank Bascombe's character exactly right.

Ford says the real estate milieu appealed because of the ''potentially hilarious'' lingo, and because ''[there's something quite wonderful about realtors who] dedicate their lives, pretty much speculatively, without any promise of anything, to finding me a place to live.'' He can even imagine getting into the biz ''especially if this whole [writing] thing after 40 years just completely grinds to a halt.''
